Introduction 

We at Advanced Onion Inc. seek to help develop approaches and ideas identifying, countering, and making recommendations to avoid unintended AI bias. Like you, we are dedicated to understanding and addressing the issue of bias in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, particularly within datasets. Despite advancements in tools to detect and mitigate bias (such as the DoD Responsible AI toolkit), challenges remain prevalent. As AI permeates new domains, it brings novel, application-specific challenges related to unintended and harmful bias. This document aims to entertain concerns and provide responses related to several outlined issues: dataset and domain areas with prominent AI bias, efforts to address unintended bias, partnerships to study and mitigate AI bias, limitations and obstacles, and areas needing further research.

  • Datasets and Domains with Potential for Harmful AI Bias 

    • Healthcare: Datasets in healthcare often underrepresent minority groups, leading to biased health diagnostics and treatment recommendations. 

    • Criminal Justice: Historical biases are prevalent in datasets used for predictive policing and sentencing, disproportionately affecting minority communities. 

    • Employment and Hiring: AI systems trained on historical employment data may perpetuate gender and racial biases. 

    • Finance: Credit scoring algorithms often disadvantage minority applicants due to biased historical lending data. 

    • Security Clearance Adjudication: SSO/FSO (people) possibly biased input to the investigative process may not be detected by AI and therefore is the counter-problem to a machine’s bias.
